In her role as a Senior Application Advisor at Cardamom she brings together her expertise in coding, compliance, and EHRs to help healthcare organizations operate more efficiently. Her journey reflects a lifelong passion for continuous learning, collaboration, and helping providers use their resources to deliver the best care possible.
Sabrina has had a long professional career in healthcare, where she gained the skills and insights that make her a valuable member of the Cardamom team today. With all this experience, she has a lot to say about what makes working in health IT — and being a part of Cardamom — so special.
My first experience with the healthcare industry was in high school as an intern admitting patients. That was it. From then on, I knew where I wanted to work, and I’ve been in healthcare ever since. At 19, I started out in the health information management department of a local teaching facility, where I worked as a certified coder. That was where I got my start in health IT.
That early experience right out of high school gave me a deep understanding of the complexities of clinical documentation and how critical accurate data is in healthcare. From there, I moved into a compliance supervisor role. Here, I focused on ensuring regulatory adherence and maintaining the accuracy of healthcare documentation. In this role, I could put my coding skills to use to make the business side of medicine as accurate and data-driven as the clinical side.
What I love about the work I do is that it’s my way to make a meaningful, positive impact on the healthcare system. For example, being a compliance supervisor meant making sure every penny went where it was needed to allocate resources properly and provide the best care.
While working in compliance, I began developing a deeper interest in the systems that supported healthcare data. That curiosity eventually led me to pursue a role as an Epic analyst. In that position, I discovered a passion for optimizing EHRs and improving the workflows clinicians rely on every day.
My experience across coding, compliance, and Epic systems created a unique skillset that ultimately brought me to Cardamom. A former colleague spoke highly of my work to the team, and after learning more about the organization, I felt it was the perfect fit.
From coding to compliance and auditing to optimizing EHRs, I’ve seen that improving the technology behind healthcare operations ultimately helps clinicians provide safer and more effective care every day. Even though I don’t work directly with patients, my work has a real impact on their outcomes.
Working in the healthcare industry means every day I’m doing something to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Healthcare also offers strong career stability and continued demand for skilled professionals, even during economic uncertainty. But beyond a sense of purpose and stability, I find the most rewarding aspects of my work are collaboration and continuous growth.
In my role, there’s nothing more exciting than “winning as a team,” and there’s always more learning to do to help our team keep winning. Health IT is constantly evolving, so I’m encouraged to continue expanding my skills and staying at the forefront of EHR innovation. That combination of impact, teamwork, and ongoing learning keeps my career both exciting and fulfilling.
One of the other things I appreciate about working in healthcare is how it’s changed how I approach things in my personal life. Being an analyst at work and having this health IT background makes me an analyst at home, too. You start making more data-driven decisions to optimize your own life. Working in healthcare has also made me a better advocate for my own health experience because I can see things from my perspective as a patient and from my doctor’s perspective as part of the health system.
I’ve been in healthcare and health IT for my entire professional life, so I’ve seen a lot of changes happening in the field. One of the biggest changes is that I’ve seen more and more women transition into health IT from their medical roles. More women are finding opportunities for steady, rewarding careers in healthcare — like doctors, nurses, and ambulatory teams — and there are pipelines from these careers to health IT that didn’t exist before, which is really exciting to see.
For me, every day at Cardamom is an opportunity to help healthcare systems function more effectively for the people who rely on them.
I typically start my mornings reviewing and triaging tickets within the system’s ticket management platform, identifying and resolving issues before they impact hospital operations. Addressing these problems quickly helps ensure clinicians and staff can continue their work without disruption.
Beyond daily issue resolution, I focus on designing and building advanced system enhancements and upgrades within the EHR These improvements help make it more efficient and user-friendly for frontline teams.
Collaboration is also a major part of my day. Through team huddles and conversations with stakeholders, both at Cardamom and my customer, I work to translate operational needs into technical solutions that improve how healthcare organizations use their EHRs.
When I first learned about Cardamom, I was intrigued by the company’s reputation. The organization is ranked the number one Best Place to Work in Madison by Madison Magazine and the sixth best place to work in healthcare nationwide by Modern Healthcare.
But what stood out to me most was experiencing the culture firsthand. I’ve never been in an organization quite like Cardamom!
From my very first day, the kindness and support from the team made an immediate impression. Rather than feeling like just another employee, I felt genuinely valued and appreciated from the get-go. It’s rare to find a workplace that maintains such high industry standards while also fostering a culture that feels supportive and personal.
In my experience, Cardamom’s culture is built on a genuine sense of inclusivity and teamwork.
Employees are treated like family, and everyone — regardless of background or role — is treated with the same respect and support. The collaborative environment encourages people across teams to step in and help whenever it’s needed.
That sense of teamwork makes a significant difference in the day-to-day experience of working here. I work in an environment where colleagues consistently ask how they can support one another and where appreciation for each person’s contributions is clearly expressed.
Cardamom also demonstrates its commitment to employees through strong benefits and flexible work options. These policies reinforce the idea that the company genuinely cares about the health and well-being of its team members. From day one, the kindness of the Cardamom team has been absolutely incredible.
